Turmeric
A golden rhizome used as a spice. Extract research does not mean a homemade drink has a proven therapeutic effect.
What it is
Turmeric is used in cooking, traditional preparations, powders, and concentrated extracts.
Food and supplements are different
Extracts can deliver much larger amounts of selected compounds than food. Results from one formulation should not be assumed to apply to every tea, powder, or supplement.
Traditional uses
Used in South Asian food traditions and in traditional systems for digestive discomfort and inflammation.
Scientific evidence
Laboratory and clinical research has examined curcumin and turmeric, but evidence is not sufficient to support broad treatment claims. Product formulation strongly affects exposure.
Precautions
Concentrated products can cause digestive symptoms and have been linked to liver injury in rare cases. Use extra caution with liver or gallbladder disease, pregnancy, or medicines.
