Peppermint
An aromatic mint used in food, tea, and preparations for digestive comfort.
What it is
Peppermint is a hybrid mint rich in aromatic compounds such as menthol. Tea, enteric-coated oil capsules, and essential oil are very different products.
Traditional uses
Traditionally used after meals for gas, bloating, and digestive discomfort.
Scientific evidence
Enteric-coated peppermint oil has been studied for irritable bowel syndrome. That evidence does not automatically apply to tea or essential oil.
Precautions
Peppermint can worsen reflux. Essential oil should not be swallowed casually or applied undiluted, and it requires special caution around infants and children.
