Gel and latex are not the same
Clear inner-leaf gel is used in topical products. Aloe latex contains stimulant laxative compounds and should not be treated as interchangeable with the gel.
Traditional uses
The gel is used on minor skin irritation and burns. Latex has been used as a laxative.
Scientific evidence
Topical aloe has been studied for several skin uses with mixed results. Oral aloe products vary and are not proven general treatments.
Precautions
Do not ingest aloe latex; it can cause severe cramping, diarrhea, electrolyte problems, and drug interactions. Avoid medicinal oral use during pregnancy.
